The summer season begins…

‘We now go into the five month summer season. During this period my concentration is on the higher quality flat racing along with the summer jumps.

At this very early stage the flat is just developing. So far we have had only a handful of better class meetings to provide pointers for future use. This week there is an informative trials card at Ascot on Wednesday and the Newmarket Guineas meeting from Friday to Sunday. In the following weeks there are high profile three day meetings from both Chester and York. The overall picture will begin to establish some clarity.

The summer jumps picture is interesting. Just recently we have seen the ground begin to firm up with entries rapidly increasing as the faster ground horses at long last get more suited conditions. Indications are that connections will be keeping a number of the faster ground types in training as we go into the summer which should bolster the overall jumps programme.

The week ahead provides us with the five day Punchestown Festival starting on Tuesday. Plus there is a Hunter Chase card at Cheltenham on Friday which will be of interest and jumps action from Hexham and Uttoxeter on Saturday. There are forty-nine summer jumps fixtures scheduled in May.

After a cold April temperatures are forecast to rise this week. Plenty of rain around early in the week becoming drier as we approach the weekend.

I have a number of meetings arranged with various connections over the next couple of weeks as part of my plans for the summer season.’
