10/1 Taurean on the upgrade

Seven meetings today across Britain plus the Curragh in Ireland. We are going to look at two races from Ascot. The going there is Good to Firm and the course has been watered.

 2.15 Ascot

Four non-runners leaving seven to post to contest the £9,700 first prize.

Appeared is one of my noted horses from last season.

Has been gelded and is expected to go well on seasonal re-appearance.

Difficult race to price accurately. The books generally have him in at around 10/3 which is taking no chances.

4.00 Ascot

After travelling smoothly Fastnet Tempest looked sure to win on latest start in Newbury’s Spring Mile. However he hung and found little – maybe this drop to 7f will suit.

At around 10/1 I prefer the chance of Taurean Star.

He won with something to spare at Yarmouth and looks on the upgrade.

Just the one race for us yesterday and it brought a dramatic finish as the gambled on Western Hymn claimed victory for us on the line. Discover more about my work by applying for your free information pack at: www.slh.co.uk

Churchill challenger

Busy day with six meetings in Britain headed by the classic weekend at Newmarket. Two races for us to study, including the Guineas. Both races are on ITV.

The going at Newmarket is Good to Firm and watering has taken place.

1.50 1m1f (Row) Spring Lodge Stakes (Handicap) Class 2 (3yo+)

We start with the opening race of the meeting which for many years was known as the Suffolk Stakes .

Market looks correct with Ballet Concerto and Next Stage heading the betting.

Both impressed with victories on their seasonal debuts at Doncaster and Newmarket respectively.  Progression to come from both.

I was quite taken by Next Stage, who I wouldn’t want to oppose.

7/2 each my provisional tissue.

Next Stage (Right)

3.35 1m (Row) Qipco 2000 Guineas Stakes Group 1 (Colts & Fillies) Class 1 (3yo)

A relatively small field compared to recent runnings, with just the ten to post. However, it still looks a top class renewal.

Churchill sets the standard on his 2yo form. Five consecutive wins last year culminating in a dominant display in the Dewhurst.

Barney Boy and Eminent impressed in their respective trials.

The unbeaten Al Wukair put up an eye-taking performance in France on his reappearance and I would keep Andre Fabre’s challenger onside.

My provisional tissue:

Churchill      6/4

Al Wukair     4/1

Barney Boy  5/1

Eminent       6/1

20/1 bar

Al Wukair

Whilst we don’t have an account bet every day, a lot of work still has to be done and this is shared with members. For example, yesterday I analysed three races for my select group of clients which provided two winners at 7/2 and 11/8. As a member of the service you get a truly professional approach that puts the members first.

Crackerjack!

First week of my summer campaign. Throughout the summer I will be concentrating on the higher quality flat and summer jumps. Today’s flat cards are modest and we will be looking at a couple of races at Fontwell this evening. The going is on the firm side of good and the seven race card commences at ‘Crackerjack! Time’ – 5 to 5 for those not old enough to remember the Friday evening kid’s TV show.

 5.55 Fontwell

Work In Progress proved a big disappointment last season. Returns from a break with a tongue-tie fitted for the first time. Features on a fair handicap mark, with conditions ideal.

Doubts concerning all 5 runners – making it a difficult race to price accurately at this stage.

Work In Progress

6.25 Fontwell

Harry Hunt sets the recent form standard.

Again there are doubts about all the runners.

7/2+ about Harry Hunt is fair.

Galileo Gold & Frankie Dettori win last year’s 2000-Guineas

Great anticipation regarding the Newmarket Guineas meeting this weekend. Back tomorrow morning for a really good day of racing.

Royale Ayr

We stay at Ayr today for two races including the Scottish Grand National. The going remains Good to Soft/Good in places with the ground slightly drying as the day progresses.

3.20 Ayr 1m7½f Scotty Brand Handicap Chase (Listed Race) (Class 1) (5yo+)

Tight betting heat with little unanimity between the odds compilers.

Romain De Senam enjoys a weight pull with a few of today’s rivals on recent Aintree form.

Conditions suit and I will be surprised if he doesn’t run close. 6/1 fav my provisional tissue and 7/1 generally with the books.

Paul Nicholls with Romain De Senam

3.55 4m Coral Scottish Grand National Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (Class 1) (5yo+)

30 declared for the final major national of the season following the Aintree and Fairyhouse nationals in recent weeks.

Southfield Royale is expected to run a big race. Although he has shown no form in two starts this season, he was fancied to go close in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham, but fell before half-way.

He is well handicapped on last season’s form, with connections believing he retains all of that ability. Best priced 11/1 this morning, which seems reasonable

Southfield Royale

I have recently spent some time in readiness for the forthcoming summer campaign. Always good to meet up with contacts and see their preparations first hand. Get your free info pack and qualify for special summer rates at: www.slh.co.uk

33 Musketeers?

It’s going to be a warm day at Aintree with the temperature predicted to reach around 20 degrees Celsius (68F). The going remains Good and the course has been lightly watered overnight.

Two races analysed:

2.25 Aintree 2m4f Betway Mersey Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1) (Class 1) (4yo+)

As with the Melling Chase yesterday, I price this somewhat differently to the early books.

Messire Des Obeaux sets the form standard off his third place effort in the opening race at  the Cheltenham Festival. Conditions are suitable.

Brio Conti continues to progress. Comes here after successive victories at Kempton and Doncaster.

Unbeaten in all four career starts the morning favourite is Finian’s Oscar. His most solid piece of form is his win at Hereford three starts ago last December.

My tissue:

Messire Des Obeaux  4/1

Brio Conti  9/2

Finians’s  Oscar 9/2

10/1 bar

Messire Des Obeaux
Messire Des Obeaux on his way to landing the Betfred Challow Novices’ Hurdle at Newbury

4.20 Aintree 3m½f (3m149y) Ryanair Stayers Liverpool Hurdle (Grade 1) (Class 1) (4yo+)

A difficult race to evaluate with queries about all twelve contenders.

Yanworth was disappointing in the Champion Hurdle and has to prove he stays.

Cole Harden will have conditions to suit, but the cheek-pieces and tongue tie are replaced with a visor.

Supasundae stayed on well to win the Coral Cup at Cheltenham and steps up to 3 miles for the first time.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see a bigger priced winner. Three Musketeers can go well at big odds. Currently 33/1 generally.

4/1 the field my provisional tissue.

Three Musketeers

Good day for us yesterday with a strong bet on 4/1 winner Fox Norton. We have special summer memberships now available that include the rest of this month free. See: http://www.slh.co.uk/summer-special/

Going Native?

Final day of the festival and the going remains on the good side. A cloudy day is forecast and the south-westerly breeze should see the track slightly drying through the day. We start with the Gold Cup, which has had more headlines recently for the non-runners rather than those taking part.

3.30 Cheltenham Gold Cup

Cue Card’s form of last season would give him a great chance today.

However, despite recent successes he has yet to prove he retains that ability.

Djakadam and Outlander have little between them on form in Ireland.

Native River needs to improve and in my view is too short in the market.

It is a race I will be coming back to later for clients once I have had an update from one of my senior contacts. At present I price them as follows:

Cue Card   9/2

Djakadam  9/2

Outlander   9/2

Sizing John  8/1

Native River 10/1

Champagne West 14/1

16/1 bar

Outlander

5.30 Grand Annual

A ‘Mission Impossible’ handicap to finish off the festival.

Last year’s 2nd and 3rd Rock The World and Dandrige are considered.

Nicky Henderson’s Theinval is just preferred. Currently a general 12/1.

Un De Sceaux

A final word on the thrilling exhibition by Un De Sceaux yesterday which crowned an outstanding day for Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh. Many had been premature in casting doubts over the Mullins yard and the early prices on offer for Un De Sceaux were value –  which we took full advantage of.
