Annually on Good Friday
The open day is a unique opportunity to see the horses in the training establishments throughout the Lambourn Valley. Every year over 30 trainers open their yards to the public and over 10,000 people take the opportunity to meet the horses, the trainers and to really see first-hand the Lambourn racing industry. The day includes a special schooling session over fences and hurdles plus the parade of equine heroes. Many of the top jockeys kindly take part on one of their very few 'days off' from racing.
The Lambourn Open Day attracts visitors from far and wide who attend to not only have access to the many Lambourn training establishments but also to visit the Kingwood Stud, The Racing Museum, Chapel Forge Farriers and the Equine Veterinary Hospital as well as having the opportunity to witness horses swimming in the hydrotherapy pool at Windsor House Stables.
One of the main attractions and a special treat for 2010 was the magnificent Household Cavalry performing their Musical Ride. This year top past and present jockeys including John Francome and Tony McCoy competed in a thrilling show jumping competition.
In the afternoon the massive events field with its central arena opens with a full programme of equine and country related shows and demonstrations of country skills. Trade stands offer all manner of goods and services generally connected to country pursuits. Children's activities are also available and there are many different places where food is available.
Lambourn Valley Housing Trust is one of the charities who benefit from the open day. |
